Introduction to Vedic Maths

WHAT IS VEDIC MATHS

Vedic Mathematics is the name given to a supposedly ancient system of calculation which was "rediscovered" from the Vedas between 1911 and 1918 by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji Maharaj (1884-1960). According to Tirthaji, all of Vedic mathematics is based on sixteen Sutras, or word-formulae.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LEARNING

Benefits of Learning Vedic Maths

  • Sharpens your mind, increases mental agility and intelligence.
  • Acts as a tool for reducing finger counting and written work.
  • Easy to remember & apply, create interest in student to learn math.
  • Vedic Math is complementary to regular Math taught in schools.
  • Students learning Vedic Math excel at school. Improved academic performance and instant results.
  • Vedic Mathematics Tricks is very useful in the aptitude section of the competitive exam.

WHY NEW INDIA NEEDS TO LEARN VEDIC MATHS

One of the goals of the new National Education Policy is to restore and re-establish ‘Indian-ness’.
Vedic mathematics can prove to be an important instrument in this ‘rediscovery of India’.

"It is an era of competition today, both at national and international levels. In the entrance examinations for various higher education institutions, including IITs or IIMs, mathematical ability is measured. Two things are very important here for success: Speed, i.e., solving maximum questions in the minimum possible time, and accuracy. Vedic mathematics is unmatched in addressing them both. Besides, whether your answer is correct or not can also be verified by Vedic mathematics in a very simple and quick manner. Similarly, in various competitive examinations for jobs, Vedic mathematics can be of great benefit for solving the mathematical component. At the international level, for the school evaluation ‘Program for International Student Assessment’ (PISA) that measures mathematical ability apart from other components, India, by taking the recourse of Vedic mathematics, can show its prowess." -THE DAILY GUARDIAN

THE TRUTH

Thomas Babington Macaulay’s education policy (usually referred to as Macaulayism) was more a conspiracy than schooling with a purpose. Yet, not many would be aware of the dangerous intentions of well-known Orientalists such as Max Müller. In a letter dated 16 December 1868, he wrote to the English Duke of Argyll, then Secretary of the State for India in British Government, “India has been conquered once, but India must be conquered again, and this second conquest shall be a conquest of education.” Entrapped in their vicious cycle, gradually our countrymen and women were deprived of what was theirs, and slowly, became oblivious to our rich and glorious ancient knowledge. As of today, there are very few Indians who have knowledge about Vedic hymns which contain many mathematical principles. --THE DAILY GUARDIAN, Oct 3, 2020

RICH HISTORY OF US INDIANS

But what we call Vedic mathematics today is not limited to the Vedas alone. Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha, the modern pioneer of Vedic mathematics, incorporates mathematical principles from Shulva-Sutras, Buddhist texts, Jain texts to Aryabhata, Varahamihira, Brahmagupta and modernday Ramanujan and Shakuntala Devi in it. Hence, it is also called Indian mathematics or Hindu mathematics or even ancient mathematics, it being the oldest. The antiquity of India’s mathematical progress should also be gauged from the fact that the world famous Greek Pythagoras theorem of the sixth century BCE had already been delineated by Baudhayan, in his Shulva-Sutras, several hundred years ago before Pythagoras.

WHAT IS THE RELEVANCE IN TODAY'S WORLD

Some sceptics may ask, even if we assume that Indian or Vedic mathematics is the most ancient, what is its practical value in current times? Such people must know that Vedic mathematics is relevant in the context of a new and changing India. In schools, generally, mathematics is considered to be complex, cumbersome and unexciting. However, very complicated calculations are possible, through Vedic mathematics, in a very simple way — its ease making it child’s play. For instance, while doing multiplication, kids are taught merely one method, multiplying from the right side. In Vedic mathematics, in addition to the right side, one can also multiply from the left. Not only that, crosswise and other methods of multiplication are also accessible by which complex calculations are possible in a very short period of time.

Vedic maths or Indian mental maths helps in school math class.

FAQ

1. At what age can my child start learning Vedic Maths?

An ideal age is 8 years to start learning Vedic Maths.

2. What is a course duration?

6 months for Jr. Batch (grade 3 to 5th) and 12 months for Sr. Batch (grade 6 to 8th)

3. How long is each session?

Each session duration will be for 60 minutes.

4. Why does it take so long to learn Vedic Maths?

Mastering any form of new learning and understanding well to retain it, will certainly take it's own time.

5. Can my child take more classes per week and learn faster?

People take as many as 5 classes a week too. But is your child ready to take so much learning amidst all other academics and extra curricular activities? Don't you think that his interest may fall apart if he/she is pushed beyond capacity?  Still, we have students undertaking 5 days a week classes and we can accommodate your child as well.

Should you be able to dedicate 5 hours a week, we recommend 2 learning sessions and 3 practice sessions.

6. Is it important for my kid to know multiplication and division before starting Vedic Maths learni

Yes, it is. That is why Vedic Maths is taught to a little older children.

7. How many students will be there in a batch?

A maximum of 8 students, who all will be in the same level of understanding maths (not necessarily the exact same age though).

8. Can my child start class anytime?

Vedic maths has an order of learning. Without knowing the previous Sutras, the next sutra can not be learnt. Hence, joining at the beginning of the batch is crucial.

9. Can my child join in any level in between if he has done some learning elsewhere?

Our teachers do not prefer that. Each teacher teaches in their own method and a new teacher is unsure of what learning has transpired elsewhere. To avoid such conflict in the child's mind, it's better to start afresh.

However, if your child has really progressed quite a bit, an assessment can be done by our teachers to see if he or she can be included in an ongoing batch.

10. What if my child wants to take a break in between?

Your child needing a break should be analysed by you. May be he does not want to learn anymore. We recommend you find out the reason and if it is an obstruction you can remove, better to complete the course and not take a break.

11. What happens if s/he is unable to join a session due to some unavoidable reasons?

It can happen. But as you can understand, it is a group class and missing too many classes is not a good idea. The class recording is available for the student for 15 days next, to watch and join the next session.

12. What if he doesn't like the class after I enroll?

You can opt out any time, but the fee is not refundable. So, if you have doubt that your child may not enjoy learning vedic maths, please decide accordingly. We do not prefer child dropping out in-between.

13. Will there be a demo?

We understand that being a parent with little exposure to this new learning you may be confused and need to see how it works. We have shared a couple of videos to let you know more about it. You will get a good idea about how it is taught and what it is. Please share it with your child too. There is no demo.

14. Will there be any tests?

There will be multiple tests conducted. There will be a test fee for the major ones held every quarter.

15. Will there be a certificate issued to my child?

Yes, at a successful completion, there will be a certificate issued.
